Discover how APTA is living its commitment to DEI at APTA CSM and explore opportunities to make a positive local impact.

Making a Positive Local Impact at APTA Combined Sections Meeting

APTA is committed to using our national conferences and events as opportunities to positively impact the local community and live our commitment to creating safe, inclusive, healthy, accessible, and environmentally sustainable events for all participants.

Explore the actions and attendee opportunities we have lined up for APTA CSM in Houston, Feb. 13-15.

Supporting the Houston Area Women's Center

In recognition of APTA member Christa Nicole Bauer, PT, DPT, board-certified clinical specialist in cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy, who tragically lost her life in October, APTA will donate $5,000 to the Houston Area Women's Center, a unique shelter and organization serving thousands of women, children, and families each year escaping domestic violence, sexual assault, or sex trafficking. The Houston Area Women's Center helps survivors transform their lives, free from violence.

To help the HAWC fulfill its vision of a community free of domestic violence and sexual assault. Your generosity and support are critical and appreciated.

Supporting The Montrose Center

APTA will donate $5,000 to The Montrose Center. The Center empowers the community, primarily LGBTQ individuals and their families, to live healthier, more fulfilling lives. The Center comprises a team of state-licensed clinicians, master's-level therapists, skilled educators, support staff, and volunteers who work together to create healthier futures for their community. Because LGBTQ persons face numerous health disparities compared with the general population, the Center has embraced an integrated care model with one-stop access to behavioral health and support services, adult primary care and psychiatry, and free wellness programs that empower individuals to proactively participate in their own care.

Raising Funds for Minority Scholarships

Tickets for the PT Fund Celebration of Diversity at the fun-filled Pitch 25, Thursday, Feb. 13, benefit the APTA Minority Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to PT and PTA students and faculty of ethnic and racial minorities. Tickets can be purchased when registering for APTA CSM.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Additional volunteer opportunities are available by visiting PT in the Community, a Foundation of the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy.

Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

APTA is committed to increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the association, profession, and society. In 2021, APTA's Board of Directors and House of Delegates committed our association to "pursue safe, inclusive experiences for attendees of national conferences/events" and "identify and promote opportunities for members and attendees to make a positive impact on the needs of vulnerable health populations" through those events.

The above opportunities to make a positive local impact are just a few ways our association will live our commitment to DEI at APTA CSM.

APTA CSM will continue to offer rooms for nursing mothers, all-gender restrooms, ASL interpretation upon request, and live captioning for our on-demand conference experience.

We also will make a land acknowledgment to recognize Indigenous peoples, who are the original stewards of the land where the conference is being held.

If you would like to learn more or get involved, please visit us in the APTA Pavilion in the exhibit hall at APTA CSM or email APTA DEI.
